Being environmentally responsible means that we are constantly looking at ways to improve our environmental performance. We are proud of the strides we are making relative to energy and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), food and packaging waste, and water stewardship.


There are several processes at the Allansford manufacturing site which produce water as a by-product. Warrnambool Cheese and Butter has been striving to utilise as much of this water as possible over several years. These water sources include condensate from the evaporation of skim milk and other products and membrane filtration permeates. Including the Great Ocean Ingredients plant, the site currently frees up more than 500ML of mains water per year for the city of Warrnambool.

Energy and Green House Gas (GHG)

We recognize the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).


The wastewater treatment plant at Warrnambool Cheese and Butter produces biogas which is captured and used to operate a hot water heater at the treatment plant. This renewable source of energy directly replaces natural gas and saves more than 1500 tCO2e per year.


WCB have implemented an LED light replacement program which considerably reduces the consumption of electricity.  This work has saved approximately 50t GHG per year for the past three years.

Warrnambool Cheese and Butter has had a strong focus on reducing solid waste to landfill. We have achieved this mostly through diverting waste to recycling facilities. Last year more than 400t of recyclable cardboard and plastics were diverted from landfill for recycling.


In 2010, with some assistance through funding from Sustainability Victoria, Warrnambool Cheese and Butter installed a collection and filtration system to treat cleaning solutions that were traditionally too dirty to re-use. These caustic solutions were used once and then dumped to drain. Achieving Kosher accreditation across the manufacturing site enabled this project to proceed, whereby cleaning solutions from different plants across the site could be mixed together, cleaned using nano-filtration and redistributed to plants for re-use. The project saves more than 300t/y of caustic and more than 20ML/y water.

A Pollution Incident Response Management Plan (PIRMP) has been developed for our Erskine Park (NSW) manufacturing site to comply with the requirements introduced by the Protection of the Environment Legislation Amendment Act 2011 (NSW).
